Ruby

Birthstone of July.

All red corundum is called ruby, all this type of stone is formed in the earth's crust in magma or hot mineral veins. The colour is dictated by the chromium / iron content of the stone. Ruby is believed to prolong youth, (One King of Siam claimed his youthful looks and longevity were due to a ruby) red corundum also wards off misfortune and ill health.

Sapphire

Blue sapphire shares the birthstone title of September with Lapis Lazuli, it is also recorded as the old birthstone for April.

Blue sapphire is coloured by iron and titanium impurities. Pink sapphire by small quantities of chromium, yellow by iron, and green by alternating striations of green and blue sapphire. It is said to produce prosperity, eliminate frustration and give the ability to fulfil dreams, it gives chastity and hope.

Padparadscha is the only sapphire with a separate name, it is a delicious pinky-orange/peachy colour.
